Homotypic synaptic coupling and the cellular bases of gamma oscillatory activity.

چکیده

Although the importance of gamma oscillatory activity in brain function is well established, the exact contributions of neuron and synapse type remains unclear. In their study, Hu and Agmon (J Neurophysiol 114: 624-637, 2015) show that precision as well as firing rate dependence of gamma synchrony rely primarily on cellular coupling type (chemical, electrical, or dual), rather than properties intrinsic to cell type. These findings are discussed with a focus on current ramifications and the implications for future research.

Oscillatory activity in developing prefrontal networks results from theta-gamma-modulated synaptic inputs.

The hippocampus-driven entrainment of neonatal prefrontal circuits in theta-gamma oscillations contributes to the maturation of cognitive abilities, yet the underlying synaptic mechanisms are still unknown. Here we combine patch-clamp recordings from morphologically and neurochemically characterized layer V pyramidal neurons and interneurons in vivo, with extracellular recordings from the preli...

The Bimodal Nature of Neurovascular Coupling

Neurons, by virtue of their complex and continuously changing signaling roles in brain, must be able to regulate access to energy in order to maintain their ability to communicate meaningful frequency-encoded information. This is accomplished by release of neurotransmitters to astrocytes that in turn signal the vascular system to increase cerebral blood flow (CBF). This process has been termed ...

Hippocampal Network Activity is Transiently Altered by Induction of Long-Term Potentiation in the Dentate Gyrus of Freely Behaving Rats

A role for oscillatory activity in hippocampal neuronal networks has been proposed in sensory encoding, cognitive functions and synaptic plasticity. In the hippocampus, theta (5-10 Hz) and gamma (30-100 Hz) oscillations may provide a mechanism for temporal encoding of information, and the basis for formation and retrieval of memory traces. Long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission, ...

Simultaneous activation of gamma and theta network oscillations in rat hippocampal slice cultures.

Hippocampal activity in vivo is characterized by concurrent oscillations at theta (4-15 Hz) and gamma (20-80 Hz) frequencies. Here we show that cholinergic receptor activation (methacholine 10-20 nm) in hippocampal slice cultures induces an oscillatory mode of activity, in which the intrinsic network oscillator (located in the CA3 area) expresses simultaneous theta and gamma network oscillation...

Dynamical Architecture of the Mammalian Olfactory System

The mammalian olfactory system shows many types of sensory and perceptual processing accompanied by oscillations at the level of the local field potential, and much is already known about the cellular and synaptic origins of these markers of coherent population activity. Complex, but chemotopic input patterns describe the qualitative similarity of odors, but animals can discriminate even very s...
